In sailing, there is a track that sailors have to navigate across, and the goal is to get around the course first. Boats earn point that are equal to the position in which they finish in for each opening series race. First place gets one point, Second place gets two points, and so on. The ten boats with the lowest total points advance to the medal race, where first place gets gold, second place is silver, etc.
All races have time limits except for the women's match events. A ninety minute time limit is the standard time limit for most races, except for men's keelboat, where the limit is one hundred minutes, and the men's skiff, where the time limit is fifty minutes.
In sailing competitions, "jumping the gun" is not permitted. If it occurs, the boat has to circle around the starting buoy and return completely behind the starting line before it can start.
