Sailing was used as transportation as long as some of us remember. It is said to have originated in the 17th century in Holland, and was brought to England (c. 1660) and then to the Americas, where it was common for sailors to gather for recreational and social purposes. These groups were called yacht clubs, and the recreational activities they did eventually evolved to become the adrenaline - rushing sport it is today.
